Throughout our almost 30 years of service in our dental clinic in Barcelona we have been asked many times the question: How can I get rid of tooth sensitivity?
The answer is very simple and has to do with the care that each person takes in their oral hygiene.
So, in today’s post we are going to look at some of the problems that cause tooth sensitivity and how we can work to eradicate it.
What to do with sudden tooth sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity is caused by a problem related to the gums or teeth.
When the problem involves the gums, it is because both gingivitis and periodontitis attack this tissue and lower the gum.
When it comes to teeth, it can be an indication of caries.
If we carry out a whitening treatment to improve our esthetics, we may also have a temporary episode of dental sensitivity.
How to avoid tooth sensitivity to cold?
In this sense, if tooth sensitivity appears when eating or drinking cold foods and beverages, a solution may be to stop stimulating the teeth with that cold or hot food.
But that would not be getting to the root of the problem, since tooth sensitivity should be treated by a specialist.
That is why it is recommended to visit a quality dental clinic for a more detailed inspection of the case.
In cases of prolonged tooth sensitivity and unpleasant sensation when eating, the problem may require periodontal treatment or conservative dentistry.
We must keep in mind that the same symptom can be caused by several different problems in each person.
That is why prevention and regular check-ups with the dentist are so important.
Does toothpaste work for tooth sensitivity?
Special toothpaste for sensitive gums is a short-term treatment that many dentists recommend.
For example, after a deep professional cleaning, after teeth whitening or when a treatment has been performed that leaves teeth and gums more sensitive.
Its function, thanks to fluoride, is to recover the protective layer of the teeth that may have been lost with the intervention, strengthening them and making them less sensitive to temperature changes.
Dental sensitivity during pregnancy
Pregnancy can also cause many women to feel that their mouth has changed and experience tooth sensitivity problems.
It is best to have a complete check-up before the mother-to-be becomes pregnant and after the baby is born to ensure proper dental health for the mother.
How is the diagnosis of tooth sensitivity performed?
Tooth sensitivity is a problem that can have serious consequences for patients.
In this sense, we attend cases of patients with receding gums that require tissue grafts to solve their problem, as well as the treatment that fits each case. Either a gum graft or the most appropriate dental implants.
It is a common mistake to think that a gum or tooth problem (even a slight bleeding) can be temporary, since this mistake can lead to a worsening of the problem.
What is the dental treatment for this problem?
Tooth sensitivity has several treatments depending on the nature of the problem:
If it is a mild problem, special toothpaste for sensitive gums can achieve good results. With a couple of brushings a day, these types of problems can be greatly reduced.
Another idea to keep in mind is to be careful when eating acidic foods or foods high in sugars, as they can wear down the enamel of the teeth, causing sensitivity.
If the problem is more serious, we can resort to fluoride treatment, which we can apply in our dental clinic, with the application of a special splint.
If the problem has affected the root of the tooth, an adhesive restorative treatment may solve the problem, whereas, if the root of the tooth has lost tissue, the best solution will be to perform a surgical graft.
As you can see, there are many possible causes of tooth sensitivity and many possible solutions. Although there is one thing for sure, at Clínica Dental Puyuelo we know them all.
