What is a Periodontogram and what is its function?
To begin with, and to explain how we work with periodontics and the health of your gums, we must look at our differentiating element: the periodontogram.
As you may have noticed, this long name refers to a method to improve periodontal health, that is, gum health.
Our method is based on a set of examinations that we perform until we obtain a global picture of the patient’s periodontal health.
At this point, our specialist, Dr. Neus Carrió, is responsible for preparing a personalized assessment of the patient’s case to record all the necessary data in our database before starting the treatment.
Then, based on this first thorough examination, a customized treatment is established to solve any gum problems the patient may have.
What is dental curettage?
Sometimes, the state of the patient’s periodontal health can be really bad, that is why we always recommend not to let the first symptoms of gingivitis pass.
If periodontal disease progresses, periodontics and professional curettage may be necessary.
Dental curettage is a treatment that removes tartar and infected tissue when it has advanced beyond the gum and is located in the subgingival area, forming periodontal pockets.
What are periodontal pockets?
Periodontal pockets are the consequence of a serious gum problem that has not been treated in time.
These pockets are an accumulation of tartar and cause the appearance of gaps between the tooth and the gum.
If not treated in time, this type of problem can lead to tooth loss, so it is important to perform periodontics to solve them.
What is periodontal probing?
In this regard, before proceeding with periodontal treatment, the first thing we do is to use periodontal probes.
This instrument helps us to know if a patient has periodontal pockets and thus be able to diagnose the severity of periodontal disease.
If bleeding of the gums continues during this examination or alterations in the tissue are shown, we are probably in the presence of periodontal pockets, which is a clear symptom of advanced periodontitis.
What is periodontal maintenance therapy?
In this case, periodontal maintenance therapy will be key to curing periodontal disease and restoring the patient’s gum health.
For this purpose, as we have explained, we perform a complete periodontal analysis to analyze the condition of the patient’s mouth.
In a second phase, we start with periodontal treatment, trying to remove as much tartar as possible in one session.
Occasionally, this process may be repeated (although two sessions are normal) depending on the severity of the case.
Does periodontics hurt?
Periodontics is a treatment that can alleviate dental pain caused by tartar buildup in or under the periodontal tissue.
However, periodontal treatment is performed under local anesthesia, so it is painless at the time it is performed.
It is normal that the patient may feel tooth sensitivity after a periodontal treatment, but to alleviate it we recommend the use of specific toothpaste to recover the lost dentin layer.
How long does periodontics take?
As we have explained, it is normal for a periodontal treatment to be carried out in two sessions, although everything depends on the specific case and how advanced the periodontal disease is.
