The teeth should have a white shade, more or less dull, depending on the person. What represents a problem is having black or very dark teeth, a situation that requires a solution.
I have a dark or blackened tooth, what can I do?
Occasionally it may happen that a tooth that was healthy starts to change color and become dark or blackened.
Why does this happen? Well, this problem can be due to several causes, such as a strong blow, which can damage the tooth and cause damage to the dental nerve, or pulpitis or deep caries.
If caries advances to the nerve, it can destroy it, causing what is known as dental devitalization and, in more serious cases, pulp necrosis.
This problem is a clear indication that the tooth is devitalized, in other words, that both the pulp and the dental nerve are dead, which cuts off the blood flow and makes them much less healthy than teeth that do have nerve.
What is the solution to a black tooth?
To solve a problem of tooth discoloration caused by the lack of nerve, the most advisable is to perform an endodontic treatment.
In this way, necrotic tissue is removed from the pulp and nerve, allowing the tooth to remain healthy and avoiding extraction.
Once the basic problem has been solved, we can carry out dental aesthetic solutions to restore the whiteness of your tooth, such as internal whitening, which restores the natural white of the damaged tooth.
My tooth is black on the gum area. What does this mean?
The fact that a tooth darkens, as long as it is not due to a nerve problem, has to do with the need for professional hygiene.
Other factors that aggravate this situation are smoking and abusive consumption of foods such as coffee or tea and others like the ones you can see in this article to solve yellow teeth in a simple way.

What causes black teeth in boys and girls?
As in adults, black or darkened teeth have the root of their problem in a nerve, so a treatment called pulpectomy (if the roots of the tooth are treated) or pulpotomy (if only the pulp chamber is treated) will be necessary to properly cure the tooth.
In addition, it is more common to see caries problems in baby teeth, given the less exhaustive hygiene that children perform in their dental hygiene.
For this reason, it is advisable to take extreme precautions with the youngest children, trying to prevent them from consuming excessive sugars and going to the pediatric dentist for regular check-ups.
How long does it take for a tooth to turn black?
The time it takes for a tooth to turn black from the time the nerve dies can vary from patient to patient.
However, it is normal that the tooth itself warns with other symptoms, such as pain or a change in color to a darker shade close to brown.
This may also be caused by the accumulation of dark tartar on the teeth due to poor oral hygiene.
Therefore, if you think you may have pulp necrosis or that the tooth is changing color, it is best to go as soon as possible to a specialized center, as our dental clinic in Barcelona.
How to solve the black tooth?
As we have seen, pulp death results in the tooth gradually changing color from its natural shade of white to a gray tooth, a brown tooth and finally a black tooth.
This is where the endodontic treatment with microscope applied by our endodontist, Dr. Montserrat Mercadé, one of the most respected specialists in this treatment in Barcelona.
After a professional curettage and the conclusion of the treatment, which we perform with a dental microscope to obtain extreme precision, the tooth is clean of pulp necrosis.
The next step would be to whiten the endodontic tooth internally, thus restoring the patient’s tooth to its natural appearance.
