Pediatric dentistry is the branch of dentistry that deals with children. If we were a normal clinic, this would be the end of this week’s article. But, since we are not, we are going to explain to you why to entrust something so important to quality professionals.
How does pediatric dentistry work?
In our dental clinic in Barcelona we have an area specifically dedicated to pediatric dentistry.
pediatric dentistry
. Dr. Anna Parellada is in charge of it.
“It was always clear to me that I wanted to work with children. Their spontaneity, innocence and tenderness have always touched me, and there is no one like them, I love it!”, says our pediatric dentist.
Working with children in the clinic can be something new and fun for them, which will show them how to start taking care of their oral health.
“A visit to the dentist is something new for them, and it can even be stressful. My job is to make that visit enjoyable, even fun. I take my profession very seriously, and there is nothing that makes me prouder than to see the trust parents place in me,” adds the Dr. Parellada.
How to treat children at the dentist’s office?
Pediatric dentistry has some particularities when it comes to treating small patients, since most of them may have the famous “fear of the dentist“.
That is why when they come to the clinic, the treatment is almost as important as the personalized attention itself, so that they feel as comfortable as possible.
For this purpose, our clinic has a play area dedicated to children so that they do not get bored while waiting for the attention of our specialist.

What does pediatric dentistry cover?
Pediatric dentistry covers all types of treatment from the eruption of the baby teeth until the permanent teeth have grown into the patient’s mouth.
Generally, from 1 to 3 years of age, the baby teeth erupt and are fully developed.
This is the most common range, although depending on each patient this age may vary. Once all the permanent teeth have erupted, it is time to move on to general dentistry.
What are the most common conditions?
When a family comes to the office with their children, there are several cases that we encounter on a regular basis:
- First review. From the first year of life onwards, small babies can be taken to the pediatric dentist to examine the correct formation of the primary (baby) teeth.
- Childhood caries. Non-existent or inadequate brushing can favor the appearance of the first cavities, a problem that must be treated in time.
- Position of the teeth. When erupting, the first teeth may not naturally position themselves properly from the beginning. This could be a good time to begin interceptive orthodontic treatment.
- Trauma. Many of our small patients also present with trauma, which can lead to pain or even tooth loss.
What are the most common treatments in pediatric dentistry?
As we have seen, the most common reasons to visit a pediatric dentist are related to the revision of teeth in the first years of life, caries and the position of the teeth.
That is why the most common treatments are aimed at treating these problems. For example, we offer interceptive orthodontic treatments to guide the correct growth of teeth in children.
We also offer what is known as endodontics for children, pulpectomy or pulpotomy, which allows you to end the pain of a tooth after a deep cavity.
In any case, our recommendation is always the same. At this age, prevention is more important than ever.
Teaching children to understand the importance of proper oral health is key to the correct development of their smile.
