Diastema, or space between the teeth, is a problem that affects the dental esthetics of patients. This is how it can be solved.
What is tooth spacing or diastema?
Tooth spacing or diastema is one of the esthetic problems that can affect the front teeth.
It assumes that the upper central incisors, commonly known as pallets, are separated by several centimeters, leaving a pronounced interdental gap between them.
What are the causes of tooth separation?
The main causes of separation of the upper central incisors are:
- Difference in arch size. When there is a disproportion in the size of the arch with respect to the teeth, these tend to grow more spread out.
- Microdontics. This is a mismatch in the size of the teeth that causes some teeth to be smaller than normal. This means that the teeth have more space and do not touch.
- Missing tooth. The lack of a dental piece can end up favoring the mobility of the rest of the adjacent teeth. In the case of the upper arch, this could lead to a diastema.
- Interdental frenulum. Abnormal growth of this part may cause separation of the front teeth.
There are more causes, but almost all are related to the distance or position of the teeth close to the vanes.
How to bring separated teeth together?
To join the teeth separated by a diastema we can resort to several dental esthetic treatments.
The most recommended is the orthodontics that we apply in our clinic in Barcelona. Whichever method is chosen, whether braces, esthetic orthodontics or Invisalign are very efficient against this problem.
The reason is that orthodontic treatment is able to modify the position of the teeth so that they find the most appropriate place in the patient’s mouth.
This includes solving problems such as interdental space, crowding, bite problems and, of course, a case of diastema.
In addition to orthodontics, other types of treatments can be applied, such as dental veneers, which solve the problem immediately, or the placement of dental implants if the problem is caused by a missing tooth.
Finally, we can resort to dental surgery in a process known as frenectomy or gingivectomy, with which we can remove the labial frenulum to end the diastema.
Celebrities with spaced teeth
One of the latest fads in Hollywood a few years ago was to venerate the diastema and give it a lot of prominence, instead of hiding or curing it.
Celebrities such as Patricia Conde, Madonna, model Vanessa Paradis, Mick Jagger’s daughter, Georgia May Jagger, or actor Johnny Depp wore this defect.

From an esthetic point of view, this gap is quite unattractive, but from a dental point of view it is not at all advisable to leave a diastema.
The problem is that this interdental gap prevents the upper front incisors from performing their function properly when biting.
Where to fix a diastema in Barcelona?
At Clínica Puyuelo we have the latest dental technology and the most advanced treatments in dental esthetics.
To solve problems of separated teeth, our recommendation is orthodontics in our clinic. Our specialist, Dr. Eva Stöber will supervise and plan the most suitable treatment for you, taking into account all the factors at hand.
What technology applied to tooth spacing do you use in the clinic?
The first thing we do to find out the state of a patient’s dental support is to take an X-ray with our 3D CT system.
Thanks to this system, we obtain a three-dimensional image of the patient’s mouth, making it much easier to plan a customized treatment.
Then, we can use the Smile Design. A powerful tool that allows us to show you how the final result of the treatment will be before starting it.
We also have teleradiographs, which are indicated for this type of situation.
How is this problem solved?
After planning the orthodontic treatment, the dentist in barcelona will schedule periodic check-ups with the patient to adjust the brackets (or to change the aligners if Invisalign treatment has been chosen).
After the necessary clinical time, orthodontics will do its job and the diastema will be corrected, while the rest of the teeth will find their position in the patient’s mouth.
This not only corrects the esthetic defect, but also ensures that the rest of the teeth are positioned in the most correct way.
For patients who do not want to go through such a lengthy process or undergo surgery, dental veneers can be used for
dental veneers
are also a very interesting solution, since they allow you to improve your smile in less than a month.
